Physical education

The PE department aim to embed Knowledge, provide Enrichment, promote Everlasting and lifelong Participation.

Knowledge: Develop the physical competence and the theoretical understanding in a broad range of sports. Securing an understanding of how physical activity improves physical, emotional and social well-being.

Enrichment: Discovering enjoyment through a wide programme of sports and extra-curricular activities which aim to provide opportunities for pupils to flourish. Students will engage in competitive sports band activities which provide valuable life skills to take beyond the school gates.

Everlasting: To spark a love of healthy active living that will last a lifetime.

Participation: To take part in a varied range of physical activities for a sustained period of time. Igniting a love of sports which build character and self-confidence.

After five years at St Columba’s, all of our students will have something to KEEP.

Literacy in physical education:

It includes subject-specific vocabulary and terminology in both theory and practical lessons.

In addition, we will consider reading skills for comprehension and interpretation that will enable students to understand and analyse exam questions.

We will address writing skills and academic language required in assessed written work.

Finally, we will provide opportunities for pupils to engage in extended writing in line with the schools overarching literacy drive.
